After careful consideration over the last few months, the Board of Directors has decided that the Harris County Healthcare Alliance has served its purpose and should come to an end.  We are very proud of the many successes the Alliance has been able to achieve since its inception and believe that the Alliance has played an important role in facilitating collaboration in the healthcare community. Thank you all for the work you have been a part of these past years in helping create a stronger and more cohesive healthcare system throughout Houston and Harris County.

Healthconnect Update: April 2014

Greater Houston Healthconnect (Healthconnect), the organization that is creating a network for shared electronic health records (EHRs) across the community’s healthcare providers, is finally reaching that tipping point of achieving critical mass. The process has taken several years, but when enough people and providers are enrolled and participating, the area-wide system will prove highly efficient and effective.

Federally Facilitated Exchanges-Policy Brief

One of the key mechanisms for expanding health coverage under the Affordable Care Act is the creation of new state-based health insurance exchanges. Starting with an “open enrollment” period in October 2013, people who do not have access to affordable insurance through an employer and who do not qualify for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) will be able to purchase “qualified health plans” through these exchanges, most likely to be accessed by many consumers through new websites. Federal subsidies will be available through exchanges to make coverage more affordable for low-income people. The new coverage purchased through exchanges will take effect in January 2014.

This policy brief explores the issues now arising as the federally facilitated exchanges are being shaped.
